Hi Paul,

I am a sound designer who does all his work on a UMAX S900 running OSX. My configuration :

UMAX S900
XLR8 MACH Carrier G3 366MHz processor
1GB RAM

Internal SCSI chain:
Seagate Barracuda (holds OS 10.2)
Quantum Fireball (holds OS 9.1)
Matshita CDRom
Seagate Medalist

External SCSI chain:
IBM DCA drive
Matshita CDRW
Iomega Zip 100

PCI :
Emagic Audiowerks 8 channel digital/analog sound card
XLR8 MACHfire Firewire card running a GLYPH 80G drive and a OWC Mercury 80G
Belkin BusPort USB card

I use SCSI 'cause that's what I have. IDE is certainly fast enough now to do audio - you should be fine either way as long as the drives have fast access time. I do most of my recording to the Firewire drives these days.

I use a MOTU Express XT for MIDI out of the Modem port. USB is probably the way to go unless you get something used. I'm not familiar with any Firewire MIDI devices.

In OSX I run PEAK 4, SOUND HACK, JAM, TOAST (and obviously iTunes). In OS9.1 I run LOGIC PLATINUM 4.8, METASYNTH and the free version of PROTOOLS. The paid version of QUICKTIME is handy to have also. I'll eventually go to the new version of LOGIC but I don't have the money now plus OSX is pretty taxing on my system, so I don't think I'd get much advantage from the current LOGIC other than bells and whistles. METASYNTH doesn't have an OSX version as far as I know - haven't checked in a while but don't have the money for that either. There is a free PROTOOLS for OSX promised but I'm not holding my breath.

The only weirdness (OSX on unsupported machine) is that iTunes won't play CDs in the internal drive - not sure what that's about.

All in all, it's a pretty reliable and serviceable system - when I have the cash though, I'll definitely move to a G5.

Good luck - remember loads of RAM is the key to audio success.

Joe.

Hello all,

I just wanted to ask if anyone here is doing any audio recording work
with their Unsupported OS X macs in OS X.

In particular I am curious about whether you are using SCSI vs. IDE
drives, and if you are using USB vs. Firewire vs. a Serial Port MIDI
Interface.

If you could also mention which apps you are running that would also be
helpful.
