You are correct about USB corresponding with NWRs, I would think it would be odd that Apple would choose FireWire without it corresponding to something as it would be easier for them to choose something like a processor clock speed to as a cut off if that was their goal - it would be far more clean cut, probably equally received, and perhaps easier understood.
