Personally I still think its a typo or laziness.

If they require FireWire then how is it that they don't require FW on old iMacs? So long as there are contradictions on the page I am going to assume that the general written requirements are what are accurate and that the inclusion of some specific models and not others in the lower section is ad-hoc.

There are several instances were Apple is grouping a couple series of Macs into one, its just the iMacs are the only one that seems to be causing a contradiction, I believe they simply did a bad job labeling supported systems, it seems by far the most likely.

With my limited knowledge of motherboard history, the only outlier motherboard design is the B&W G3. The Pismo, Sawtooth, iMac slot load, and iBook FW all used similar motherboard components, when Apple decided (wisely) that they should standardize on one motherboard architecture after the 9600/6500/6400/4400/6300 motherboard proliferation of the pre-SJ era. The only 10.4 supported MBoard which predates that design is the B&W G3. I was most worried that the B&W wouldn't be supported by 10.4 when the official list was still unknown.

In a completely unscientific aside, this can be seen in the memory scores returned by XBench when these G3 designs (B&W G3, slot iMac, Pismo) are upgraded with a G4 chip. The slot iMac and Pismo's memory speed shoots up to the same level as a stock Sawtooth with the same MHz G4. The B&W's memory speed improves (as to all Macs upgraded to G4) but not nearly to the same level as the slot iMac/Pismo/Sawtooth. I suspect the iBook FW would do as well as the Pismo/slot iMac but alas there is no way to replace the G3 with a G4.
