ok then . . . . i probably don't know what i'm talking about, but i think video card compatibility might be machine dependent. for instance, i have a umax s900 clone which came with a factory IX Micro TT128 card in it, but folks in another group to which i subscribe (supermacs) say that the IX Micro cards won't work with panther (for sure) and not with any version of OS X (i think).

I have an IX Micro TT128 card driving a second monitor at work. It worked seamlessly w/Jaguar. You are right, in that it is unsupported under Panther. However, it will work with a minor hack through the terminal. The kicker is you need a supported card to connect a monitor to so you can use the terminal. Since I'm using the TT128 for a second monitor, I already have my main monitor running off the stock card the machine came with, so I have a usable monitor when the machine boots up.

Assuming you can borrow (or otherwise have access to) a supported card, after the machine boots, launch the terminal and enter:

% sudo nvram boot-args="romndrv=1"

Hit enter and you will be asked for an admin password. Enter the password then exit the terminal.

Now you should be able to shut the computer down and replace the supported card with the TT128. Boot up the computer and the TT128 should be working. This also works with some other unsupported video cards, but not all of them. The TT128 is the only one I can personally confirm it works on.

Once you've done this, you shouldn't have to do it again if you only run OS X on the machine. If you boot the machine into OS 9, you will have to repeat the process again when you boot back into OS X. The whole thing may break with Tiger too. I don't know yet.

The one caveat I have is that I'm running the card on a MDD dp 1.25Ghz G4. I don't know if there would be other issues due to using an unsupported machine and XPostFacto.
