Fyi; I got myself one of those USB/Firewire Combo-cards awhile ago.
As it happened, my Gossamer was steamed up & ready in OSX (10.3.X,
have recently allowed all sorts of upgrades suggested form apple w/
o trouble). And of course a flash-stick worked perfectly in X. Plug
& play. Later re-booted the same machine in OS 9.2.2. And then the
stick never showed up at all.
There's a trick to using the combo USB cards. You should make a
folder called USB Extensions Removed (or similar) and from the 9.2.2
System>Extensions folder remove: HID Library; SerialShimLib; USB
Device Extension; and USB Software Locator (all of these should be
version 1.5.9). Then download USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1
available here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/435
and install it. This should hopefully enable your USB in 9.2.2.
Your Firewire should hopefully work in both OS X & OS 9.2.2 already.
If it doesn't work in 9.2.2 there are a few things that might help.
There are several versions of the extensions Firewire Enabler &
Firewire Support. The last version was 2.8.7. You can look at all the
various differences in versions of 9.2.2 and also download them to
cobble together newer or older versions that might work here:
http://www.os9forever.com/Differences.html
There is also a Firewire Extension patcher in OS 9 Helper that
patches any version of the Firewire extension. This patch didn't work
on my Beige, but it might work on other old world Macs. You can tell
a patched extension my the modification date after the patch, so you
can replace it with an original version if it fails to work for you.
An explanation of why a patch is necessary is here:http://
www.os9forever.com/kbyemail031502.html
Certain CD burners aren't supported with Authoring Support & Firewire
Authoring Support v.1.1.2 or 1.1.3 which is normally installed in
9.2.2. There was a version 1.1.9 available here:http://
www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/10744
Some burners need a patched version of Disk Burner, but it's
evidently been pulled from circulation from the www.os9forever.com
site because of Apple's lawyers. It'd be nice if they could patch the
installed version, but I guess not. You'll need Toast or some 3rd
party software for those burners.
Since I still work in OS9 (pure OS9), for a number of reasons, I
was saved by OSX. And also, my Gossamer works flawlessly in X
(thanks to xpf, of course). Its only drawback is speed. Almost like
running a 9500/120 in 9.1 (or a Quadra 840AV in 8.1). But thats
expected.
Make sure the L2 cache is enabled. You can use any of the free
enablers such as CPU Director. If the CPU is slow and you can't get
an affordable upgrade, you might be able to overclock the system bus.
There is a larger bluish colored chip on the motherboard near the
CPU. If that chip has numerals "66" in the # visible on it you won't
be able to overclock; but if it has "83" in the # you can safely
overclock the bus up to 83 MHz from the standard 66 MHz. I think the
earlier Rev.A were more likely to have the 83 chip, which is good
since they were also slowest. To overclock Google "beige jumper
overclock" and change the jumper settings on the motherboard.
You can also speed things up with software modifications. Moving the
virtual memory swap file to a separate partition; or better, a
dedicated partition on another HD on another bus is fastest. You can
use a utility like SwapSwap or SwapCop or some others.
You can kill off some of the fancy features. Use Unsanity's
Shadowkiller to kill the shadows in the GUI. Change the pixel bit
depth to "thousands" instead of "millions". The application
SpeedFreak can dedicate more CPU time to the top-most application or
window. Getting a video card, especially a Radeon card can really
speed up things. You can flash a 64 MB PC Visiontek Xtasy Radeon 9100
PCI over to a Mac 8500 PCI for relatively cheap, it's faster than a
32 MB Radeon 7000 Mac Edition, and less than half price of the new
9200 Mac. All can decode DVD and enable Quartz Extreme.
