In reference to Bruce's writings: I did what was mentioned in the
first answer (that of Kris Tilford). I first did a 9.2.2. install
(no custom install option being an option). Took a few minutes. No
USB support. Opened & installed the "USB Card Support 1.4.1.smi"
that I downloaded from the site mentioned by mr. Tilford.
Restarted, and Lo and Behold! The USB-stick showed up on my desktop
as an external diskette unit-icon, and get info shows it as: Type:
Diskette, Format: Macintosh PC-exchange. Could be because it's a PC-
formattet stick. Anyhow, it works, and the Mac works. Now I'll have
to check how it will do when awoken form sleep. Apparently, some
Macs gets difficulties here.
Thanx, everyone!
I'm glad it worked for you, as it also did for me. I'm going to have
to "eat crow" somewhat and admit that Bruce may have been right about
the 1.4.1 extensions, although it really makes no sense. Here's what
I know:
I only followed what someone else posted about getting an OrangeMicro
combo USB1/FW card working for USB in 9.2.2. It worked for me also.
For my reply to Bruce's posting, I used VersionTracker.com for the
release date of 1.4.1, and Pure-Mac.com for the release of 9.0.4
which were the same date. Normally any extensions that work in OS 9
works for all versions, but on the Apple Discussions pages I saw the
FAQ titled: "USB PCI card not working under Mac OS 9.2.2" which was
written by an Apple tech. I'm copying the entire text below, but it
says 1.4.1 was only for 8.6 which is obviously an error unless it's
just a coincidence they released it on the same day as 9.0.4, and
also there is an Apple text that says under System Requirements: "8.6
or greater" which I'm now assuming was written before 9.1 was
released, and thus this means that 1.4.1 is only for 8.6, 9.0 &
9.0.4. According to the text below we should be using extensions
1.4.6 instead of 1.4.1. I extracted these, which was a hassle, and
they also worked for me. I don't know, I guess I was partially wrong
and Bruce was partially right, but it probably doesn't matter since
at least three of us have got function from the 1.4.1 extensions
which are much easier to install. Kris

Topic:USB PCI card not working under Mac OS 9.2.2
Q: I have installed a USB PCI card in my beige PowerMac G3 (or any
other Power Macintosh computer without built-in USB ports) running
Mac OS 9.2.2, but the card is not working / not recognized by the
system. What can I do?
A: This problem is often caused by one of the following three issues -
1.) A Mac OS installer only installs the USB extensions that are
necessary to use an USB adapter card if USB ports are present on the
computer at the time of installation. This would apply if the USB PCI
card was installed after installing the operating system.
2.) Several reports in the past have indicated that the USB
extensions that come with Mac OS 9.2.2 may not always work on
computers without built-in USB ports.
3.) USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 is not intended for use with Mac
OS 9.1 or higher, as these systems require newer versions of the USB
extensions than those included in USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1.
If the 1.4.1 USB extensions have been installed anyway, this can be
the reason why the USB card is not working.
(From the ReadMe-document: "Mac OS versions 9.1 and later include a
later version of this software. Installing USB Adapter Card Support
1.4.1 over Mac OS 9.1, 9.2 or later could result in the USB adapter
card not working.")
The common solution to the three issues above is to install the
following USB extensions (that were included in Mac OS 9.1):
HID Library 1.4.6
Serial ShimLib 1.4.6
USB Device Extension 1.4.6
USB Mass Storage Support 2.0.9
USB Software Locator 1.4.6
USB Support 1.4.6
You can use TomeViewer to extract these extensions from either the
Mac OS 9.1 download update or a (retail) Mac OS 9.1 CD.
To install them, open System Folder > Extensions, move any earlier or
later versions of these extensions that might be present to the
Desktop (you can delete them once your USB card is working) and drag-
and-drop the extracted extensions to the Extensions-folder.
Then restart the computer to activate the new extensions.
If the USB card is not recognized after installing the new
extensions, resetting the PRAM and/or resetting the CUDA chip might
help.
