I'm reviewing the 9600 one and will get back to you about the L2 cache.
On my 9500, it is on the motherboard, and not on the original cpu card,
but is soldered into it. My Sonnet upgrade cpu, has the L2 cache on the
upgrade card, and could conflict with the 9500s motherboard L2 cache
... causing it to freeze at startup if not treated properly ... don't
know about using the original cpu/L2 cache setup and installing
Jaguar/Panther ... I've only attempted the XPF installations using
upgrade cards ...
