Anyone tried using a Sonnet ATA/100 IDE PCI card in an 8500 or 9500
(or similar), and noticed any conflicts?
1. OS X 10.3.9 system freeze when ATA/100 attached Seagate 80GB
used in conjunction with an M-Audio 2496 PCI sound card
2. Slows down system performance.
3. Audio stutter/failure in an 8500 under Jaguar when used with an
M-Audio 2496 card.
I have seen serious performance problems on both Beige G3s and
pre-G3 boxes when trying to use multiple PCI cards. The PCI bridge
on the Powersurge (pre-G3) boxes like yours was particularly bad,
but even the G3's PCI support was marginal.
I had to quit using the 10/100 ethernet card in my "Beige G4"
because of the competition for the bus between it and video were bad
enough it even hurt mouse movement.
The Beiges are only PCI v2.1, does the ATA/100 or 2496 card specify a
PCI v2.2 slot? I made this mistake with a v2.2 USB2, FW, 100bT combo
card. I wanted to use it in a Beige but it's a 2.2 card and my
Beiges are all 2.1 or earlier. D'oh!
I've seen similar performance issues with my Powersurge (pre-G3)
boxes. I had an Apple 10/100 PCI card working well in OS X PM7600
G3/400 running as a server (w/2x120GB HDs on a PCI ATA/66 card) but
over a period of months, the performance just ground to a halt - I'd
be getting less than 10bT performance thru a 100bT connection.
Switching to the MBoard 10bT Enet actually sped network transfers up.
I moved the whole system as-is to a Beige G3/333 DT chassis and it
works perfectly, no slowdowns for at least 6 months now - it's a
great server! OS 10.4.1, 384 MB RAM, same PCI cards mentioned above.
I have not seen the Beige performance issues mentioned in my other
Beige G3s- one has a G3/500, OS 10.3.9, 768MB, PCI Rage128 & PCI
USB/FW. The rest (G3/266, G3/366 (oc 333), G3/466) don't have G4s &
only 1 (466) has a PCI USB card. All running 10.3.9 - 10.4.2, Revs
A-C, no probs with any.
