Sorry bad wording - I believe the first candidates to be Laptops for Intl chips, second point was people expect it to be a watershed change when they are announced I don't see it that way - this time next year then maybe a viable time to "switch" but I think PPC will give Intel a run - particularly on the desktop side.

Well, I've seen some of the Dual-core Intel systems, haven't yet played with a dual-core Mac. I think on the G5 side, you're right, but again, the major reason Apple went to Intel is the laptop systems, and I'll hold off judgement on perfoirmance until I see a dual-core Yonah-based Mac laptop. As someone else said in this discussion (maybe you) Intel's been chasing for Apple's business for a long time.

They could well give Apple first crack at these chips (which Intel announced yesterday) off the line. I'm waiting to see what Steve's "Oh and one more thing..." next week, then train my telescope out Cupertino way to see the bright flash as Apple's Apple Store servers vaporize under the load ;-) That's an optimistic prediction, btw, very optimistic...

I do hope you are right but from what I've seen in PC laptops I aint that impressed with the speed from the so called faster CPUs that they have. Just remember that even now there are parts of the OS that still not 64bit, so I am betting it will take a while to get full Intel code, then port all the supporting apps to full code, etc, etc.

Oh, yeah, on the application side things will look like the PPC transition for a while, but I've far less concerns about 64-bit versus 32-bit. 64 bits doesn't get you anything in speed, per se; we saw a huge improvement in the 16-32 bit transition, but that was because everything was crammed into the 16-bit memory space, and everything was against the wall. That transition also marked a steady increase of CPU speed. (remember, this was in the day of 8, 10 and 16Mhz systems. )

For 99% of all our applications (including the OS) 32 bits is still more than they need. If I was doing bigtime database, bioinformatics or engineering simulations, yeah 64 bits is a BIG deal to me. For Photoshop, Maya or Final Cut pro, not at all...
