They should have waited for the MPC8641D. Dual G4 core, and dual
733 MHz DDR memory busses. That would make a killer powerbook
even if it wasn't any faster in MHz.
Except Moto can't get the damned thing out the door in quantity
at a reasonable price, and would really rather make other chips
anyway.
We all know the dual core thing from moto has been promised for
some time now - whilst the specs are impressive - proof is in
delivery. I too lament the passing of PPC.
I am also going out on a limb if people really think that first
generation or even second revision Intel mac, be it desktop or
laptop (most likely in my opinion) be significantly faster than
the models they replace then I suspect many are in for bitter
disappointment.
I fail to see how. *existing* Intel-based laptops are significantly
faster. Unless they've utterly and completely botched the Intel
port of OS X, an Intel-based Mac is going to kick a PPC's butt.
Sorry bad wording - I believe the first candidates to be Laptops for
Intl chips, second point was people expect it to be a watershed
change when they are announced I don't see it that way - this time
next year then maybe a viable time to "switch" but I think PPC will
give Intel a run - particularly on the desktop side.
I do hope you are right but from what I've seen in PC laptops I aint
that impressed with the speed from the so called faster CPUs that
they have. Just remember that even now there are parts of the OS that
still not 64bit, so I am betting it will take a while to get full
Intel code, then port all the supporting apps to full code, etc, etc.
We've been getting PC laptops that are *killing* Macs in price,
performance, weight and power consumption for a year now. *This*
is why the change to Intel.
Unfortunately the design edge, feature edge and cache that came
with earlier Powerbooks (most notably the Titanium which still
command stupid prices secondhand here in Australia) no longer
exists for Apple so they cannot command the premium prices and
seemingly lesser speed capable machines. I will conceed the real
value of their laptops has fallen dramatically over last few years
but still "generally" cheaper to buy a windoze box, particularly
when you look at vanilla machines.
Actually, no. Apple Powerbooks are better made, and when you match
feature for feature with PC laptops, you pay the same price pretty
much.
The PC manufacturers have a vast array of cheaper, less capable
systems, though.
Think you may have missed point slightly, compare brand names and you
are right but when you get to vanilla branded things then no contest.
Some PC laptops even come with integrated TV tuners, card readers,
web cams etc. For too many people they do give a rats as long as it
has a xxx GHz processor, a DVD burner and perhaps WIFI everything
else is secondary or they don't care about, except for how much it
costs them.
In fact I believe Apple to be amongst the first to offer a 100GB 7200
rpm drive in a laptop as CTO. Trust me with some thing like VPC this
is a huge advantage.
But Motorola would rather make and sell cellphones, and IBM would
rather make CPUs for game consoles and high end servers. At least
Intel is focused on the kind of chips and goals Apple needs.
And given they have been chasing Apple for over a decade then they
will most likely provide good supply at least in first part of
relationship. I just hope that the "intel inside" is a sticker
that I can remove as a Mac user of some 18+ years I am still
struggling to swallow that I will have to see "Intel Inside" on my
Mac.
No you won't. <http://tinyurl.com/7dqto> Gone, just in time for
Apple system (I'm certain, as fanatical as Steve is about the Apple
brand, you would have never seen Intel Inside stickers on 'em anyway)
Leap ahead is better? hmmm
