A bit off topic, but it is about old hardware.

I have a b & w G3 with the stock video card (ATI Rage 128?). I've been looking at some cheap 19-inch wide screen monitors that have a native resolution of 1440 x 900. I suspect the current video card won't support that resolution. Does anyone know if that's the case?

ViewSonic has one that sells for $220 - $280 (depending on where you shop). What puzzles me is this part of the specs:

Compatibility (PC): VGA up to 1440x900 non-interlaced
Compatibility (Mac): Power Mac" G3/G4/G5 up to 1152x870 (adapter may be required)

Why would it be limited to that resolution on a Mac, no matter what model?

No reason. They're wrong. If your video card supports it, you're fine. What it looks like is that they looked at the base video capabilities of the beige Mac G3 and assumed that that's what all Macs are like.

Isn't that determined by the video card on the machine?

Yes.

And why does it say VGA for the PC, but talks about an adapter for a Mac (b & w G3 has a VGA connector)?

Because Beige G3's have Mac video and many G4's and G5's shipped with either an ADC or DVI connector. If your adapter has a VGA, then that's not an issue.

This is the only monitor that has this resolution limitation specified for Macs, but most of them don't have any Mac-specific info anyway other than to indicate Mac compatibility.

Probably because the people writing this stuff are ignorant about Macs.
