Sure there may be some bias, but that's not the reason.

I myself did not get a degree.  However, I strongly recommend most
people getting one.  My early job opportunities were greatly hindered
by my lack of a degree.  I was pretty much held back for 5+ years
building the equivalent experience.

I guess a person may rather save the money and instead work crappy
jobs for several years.  That's a choice.
Or like Chris said, work your crappy job *and* go to school,
experience + schooling = bonus points.
