That version's more than 4 years old!
After testing a bit, I stumbled on to the problem: whenever the worksheet is saved, if the particular cell that was selected has data validation enabled on it, then the POI does not seem to be able to open the document.
I'd suggest trying with a recent nightly svn build / svn checkout. IIRC, josh did a few data validation fixes fairly recently, which'll be in 3.2 once that gets released (but are more recent than 3.1)
