Yes, I would try upgrading and not only because of this issue with images. Yegor and the other developers are always working on fixes and enhancements and keeping up to date with releases is a good idea if you can (I know that some organisations have strict control procedures often making this impractical). The latest version can be downloaded from here - http://poi.apache.org/download.html#POI-3.8
Not had the time yet to run any tests of my own but I am beginning to suspect that the intermediate save could well be the issue and that it would be better to avoid it if you can. If I get similar problems when I run 'my' tests, then I will let you know. There could, of course be other causes of the problem and that is what I hope we can identify.
