I'm currently preparing for either a Win4Lin install or a dual-boot setup just to have Word/Endnote, so that I can write my thesis. And although I played around with LateX/Lyx for a couple of weeks, trying to learn this beast from hell so that I might use BibTex, I gave up.
FWIW, I author in DocBook and format my documents using CiteProc (the formatting code I'm working).
If you're not averse to XML editors, that would give you a reliable and open alternative (you can even version control your thesis in subversion or cvs!). Contact me off-list if you're interested in exploring that.
I'm a former disgruntled Endnote user, so wouldn't recommend that route ;-)
I guess this brings me to my question. I've been on this list (and the
developers list) for a couple of years, quietly following this project's
progress. However, I'm still at a loss concerning its exact needs. What stage
are we at? And more importantly, what needs to be done, and how can I help?
