oh, and I forgot to say: since my colleagues won't use it, none of our students will, which means the next generation of office users will all grow up on MS, which means OOo won't institutionalize itself among home users, which means WE WILL NEVER WIN! so I think this is an important project.
I hear you Matt. I can't tell you how often I get annoyed with my colleagues for sending me .doc files; it's the power of monopoly, and it's deep.
Still, I think we have a plan that can put a dent in this. (The interesting thing about the new citation coding, for example, is that the same code can be embedded in Word XML.)
Interesting aside:
I've just switched from using PowerPoint in a large lecture course, to the new XHTML/Javascript-based presentation system from Eric Meyer. It works beautifully. Students can access the same presentation I do, and print out an outline view before class.
However, there have been some browser glitches for a group of students. So I just said "can you please try Firefox?" Some of them came back and said to their colleagues "hey, it works better, and it's free; try it."
That's where we need to get OOo!
