In my case, I'm not entirely sure which program it was that I had to do
that malarkey (adding ordinary abbreviated words) with, right now. 
Evolution probably isn't the only one using that dictionary on my
system, so it might require a bit more in-depth testing than I'd do in
a couple of minutes.

And that kind of problem is possibly an escaping or non-escaping of
apostrophes in words, which could be the spell checker, or how
applications are interacting with it.
