Justin, My initial versions were basically fixes with some minor changes to wagon-scm. Once I get some codehaus login issues worked out, I'll post Jira issues for gitexe and for wagon-scm, and send in patches for wagon-scm.
At the moment I am having great success with implementing my mechanism using the scripty commands I posted. I'm not actually using scripts, I'm using gitexe. I want to tag the site release with the version number, more or less the way the release plugin does. I'd say I'm halfway done, and then I'll push my changes.
