Though nothing to do with the software issues, which are probably the
resuly of a too fast shutdown of the machine before buffers can write to
the hard drive, you might want to look into an "iron lung" for the laptop.
A base about yhe size of the laptop base, runs 2, 3, 4, 6 fans, powers
through a USB port, and cools the laptop somewhat effectively.   Make sure
that you avoid the overheating process, as it can eventually damage
hardware.

I hope that Brian or Rory or Dennis or one of the other very experienced
users will chime in here soon to offer suggestions as to the software
issues,
