Until OOo supports the real McCoy, you'll have to put up with that fake imitation. :( However, _one_ potential way of improving that fake, would be to create a character style that uses a small capital font. Then have a macro do a search of the abbreviations, and replace the existing character style, with the small_capital_character_style.
