"Strange things" is usually one of three things;
1) overheating CPU
2) bad memory
3) faulty power supply

I would start checking them in that order.

And cables! That should be obvious, but it needs saying anyway.

Barbara, with regard to Dotan's first point above, if you're running a
desktop, you might want to crack the case and see if it's filled with dust
and other detritus. If so, cleaning it could do wonders !...

Of course, simply running Windows for a long time can cause a lot of problems. A few years ago, I used to do Windows support at IBM for a large company. Frequently, the only way to fix a problem such as this, was to reimage the computer. This is due to the many problems within windows. I have never seen similar in Linux or OS/2 (years ago, I used to do 3rd level OS/2 support at IBM). It also never happened with the minicomputer systems I worked on for several years. This problem appears to be unique to Windows.
