Lots of us can remember the pain of a dialup.  And for noisey lines 
that may corrupt the data, I think the only true answer is zmodem, 
which does a checksum every 128 characters and if the checksums don't 
match, requests that packet be re-sent.  And it will keep hammering 
until it gets a good packet.  It even has a resume if the circuit 
hangs up in versions 3.36 & up.

Unforch, if you are on windows, I do not know of a program that can 
make use of zmodem other than the better terminal programs from 10-15 
years ago.  Procomm comes to mind, but I've no idea if it will run on 
anything newer than W-95.
