An organisation recently sent me an MS Word document, as an e-mail attachment, 
and asked that I fill it in and e-mail it back.

I don't use MS Word. I use OpenOffice, on Win XP/SP2.

I opened the document and started filling it in. As soon as I started typing I 
got an error message to the effect that the document is Read Only and I can't 
modify it.

I forwarded the e-mail to a friend who has MS Word. On his system I could fill 
in the form; it was *not* read only.

What is happening here, please?
