On the question of speed, you'd probably get better performance with a
Linux OS. Windows builds up a large registry with various software
installations. Linux does not use a registry (although some developers
seem to be moving towards having something similar).
A good cleanout of your registry may improve the PC's speed.
In my windoze daze, I had several free registry cleaners. The one I
used more than anything was RegSeeker.
