The only guaranteed way to detect a message from a non-subscribed user is to look at the "Delivered-To" headers. If and only if there is a "Delivered-To:
moderator" header then the sender is unsubscribed.

Thank you for that definitive explanation! In my not-so-humble opinion (as a list owner myself) it is a grevious mistake to allow unsubscribed folk to post their Q's to a list. This results in folks donating their valuable time and brainpower to answer questions, on-list, and the querent will not see the answer. Meaning people's time is being wasted. And the user who needed help feels unsupported. Which does not help, and may even detract from, the reputation of the software being supported on the list.

This has been discussed on many occasions on this list. There are valid arguments pro and con. The argument against requiring someone to subscribe to the list to post is that often they just want an answer to a reasonably simple question; to inflict the hundreds of postings a week on them that this list generates, to get their question answered, might not be a good thing either. What generally happens is that the person answering the question of an unsubscribed poster will cc that person on the reply. Then, the person gets an answer without being bombarded with zillions of messages that they might not care about nor understand.

I'm not saying this is an ideal situation -- just describing what often happens.
