If you are typing a thesis, you need to be using styles. See the Writer Guide for styles: http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/. By creating a custom paragraph style for this one paragraph, you can make these changes easily without changing anything in another paragraph. To create custom styles, you need to be using the Styles and Formating window. The F11 key opens and closes it. Thirdly, using the styles chapters in the Writer's Guide, you might want to reformat your entire thesis. Right now you are using only the default styles. There is so much more you can do if you create additional custom styles.
