What application are you using to open it with? I just tried an experiment where I changed the extension from .odt to .doc and while OpenOffice could open the file, Word could not. You have to select the correct file type when saving and not just change the extension. Otherwise, all you have is an ODT file with the wrong extension. OpenOffice can deal with that, Word cannot.
