What is probably happening is that the "file associations" are set to
tell Windows to use Microsoft Office to open these files. You can change
the association to use the appropriate part of OpenOffice.org instead
(either soffice.exe or the more specific program, such as swriter.exe
for word processing files). In general, you can right-click on a file of
the type you're trying to open, choose "Open With" and navigate to
OpenOffice.org under Program Files. Make sure to check (tick) the option
about always using this program for files of this type, so you won't
have to keep doing this.
