I did some comarisons of go-oo and 3.0 Beta on docx in a thread last
week. I found that, in general, the 3.0 Beta did a _much_ better job on
tables, but go-oo did better at graphics that were in the doc. I used
the MS RTF spec to do the comparison:

Unfortunately from what I hear ( read ) the two teams ( Novell and SUN )
are going down different paths for the interoperability .... kind of a
shame really and I have no idea how that is going to get worked out in
the 3.0 line...at some point I would think it would have to be.
I've once read an explanation of Mathias Bauer about the two different
approaches. (Can't find the item).
The Novell xls-filter one is a quick, but very limited. The Sun filter
one is time-expensive to make, but gives much better results.
So my expectation is that go-oo will use the Sun filters as well. And
hopefully the good part from the Novell one (graphics in the doc,
according to Gary) will be added to the Sun one.
Kind of the same situation with the solver for Calc - there is now the
Novell version and the SUN version..totally different code base...I
think in that situation it is going to be that both are extensions so a
person can choose...(even if the extensions are packaged in the
different distribution sets - another new feature for 3.0, the ability
to have pre-packaged extensions in the distro file sets [ might have
some bearing on the discussion about dictionaries?? ] ) in fact I think
there is a third solver out there on the extension site already...
The Sun-solver solution also is a wrapper, where engines of choice can
be put behind.
