We cannot authenticate senders and keep SMTP as useful as it is now.
The whole beauty of email is that some stranger can contact you out of the
blue.  And that mailing lists can send mail on your behalf.

We can work on people not being able to spoof "well-known" senders; for
that, I'd much prefer DKIM+DMARC over SPF.  SPF was a mistake and we should
all admit that.
