AFAIK jquery started something, but I just heard of that and didn't look into it. If dojo seems too bloated to you you can easily build your own dojo with just the modules you need - then it isn't bloated at all (except you're using too many components). There's a post announcing wicketstuff-dojo-1.1. somewhere on the mailinglist that explained (or at least offered to explain ;-)) how to build your own dojo - on the wiki it's described with 0.4 if I remember correctly
