I have a compaq presario 700Z running an AMD Athlon and have been having
similar issues...

RedHat 8 would overheat and lockup, Mandrake 9 would run longer/cooler,
but still overheat.

I finally uninstalled linux and gave up ( hence the recent Cygwin posts
)....now thanks to this thread, I may try it again and see if a flash of
the ol' BIOS will make it work...
