I had a friend who liked to tell me this as well. He would also say
that the UVSC CS department was nationally ranked, and BYU's wasn't.
Out of curiosity, I searched and never found any rankings that even
mentioned UVSC. With regards to the other comment, of them being better
and harder than us, I looked into it a bit. What I found out is that it
seems that they have Computer Science with a programming emphasis. In
other words, they start out learning Visual Basic (And they have the
nerve to call that Computer Science?) and then Visual C++, etc. They
don't worry about such trivial things as compilers, operating systems,
algorithms, etc. At least not to the same depth that we do. They crank
out programmers (read: code monkeys) while BYU creates Computer
_Scientists_. We're the ones that create the systems that UVSC
graduates code on or with. This is not a slam against UVSC, just a
different goal. To say that their CS major is harder than ours is like
saying that their music program (do they have one?) is harder than our
psychology program. Apples and oranges. At least, that is the way it
seemed to me. Feel free to correct me if you have more info.
