That depends largely on the organization. Working for a school district,
I've reached a point where I can no longer advance without a degree.
It's an
_absolute_ rule. They'd rather hire an unqualified person w/ a degree
than a
qualified person w/o a degree. You can chalk it up to the culture of an
educational institution like a school district, or just that it's your
tax
dollars at work -- but that's the way it is, here.

Additionally, in a employer's market like we now have, companies will
look
for _any_ reason to shorten the thick stack of resumes they receive for
every opening.

to do

In my opinion, formalized education alone rarely fully prepares you for
the
"real world." That's true in more industries than just CS/IT. I don't
know
if educational instituions just can't keep up w/ the industry, but I
_have_
seen many graduates that have absolutely no clue how to solve real
problems.

However, I firmly believe that an education is required to be successful
as
an IT professional. Whether you get it from formal schooling or not, you
WILL
get educated, or you'll wash out of the industry.

Yup.
