It's pretty easy to get the graphical boot, but the progress bar on the
other hand I haven't figured out.

Just install bootsplash, build your kernel with the appropriate options
(I think the site listed in the other post says which otherwise I can
boot up my laptop to check), and give lilo/grub a vga= line. That'll
give you graphical boot during boot and then to get graphical terminals
you need to "rc-update add bootsplash default". To get the progress bar,
theoretically you only have to append "splash=silent" to the kernel line
in lilo or grub's config. Unfortunately, as I read before somewhere, the
default init scripts in gentoo don't support the progress bar and also,
I kept getting errors about the framebuffer not having enough room for
the silent splash screen. YMMV.
