With all the new phone number portability stuff that's been enacted, you _should_ be able to take _any_ phone number (landline, cell, whatever from whoever) and use it with any other provider, be it cell, copper, cable, or probably even VoIP. I don't recall when the full deal was required to go into effect for providers of land lines, but as of last November it is required for cell phones. If it isn't here yet, it is coming "soon". An easy way to find out: call or visit your local cell phone store, and ask them if you can bring your home phone number and use it on a cell phone plan. (Might have to try a couple before you get a sales rep that knows what they're talking about, YMMV.)
