Sure.  Over SSH any X program will run just fine, exporting it's gui to
your local linux machine.  It's called X Forwarding.

But for 99% of tasks, the command line is the only game in town.  (And
if anyone thinks this is a weakness in linux, consider that Longhorn is
going to be fully configurable from the command line.)  Additionally,
the real power and simplicity of unix becomes apparent when you start to
script things.  Again.  All text.

If you really need a remote desktop, see FreeNX (google for it).  If
you're running Redhat or Fedora, see

The client (viewer) program is at http://www.nomachine.com

FreeNX can do a full Gnome desktop over a DSL connection around the
world and have it almost be as fast as local!  It rocks.
