I'd say that highly depends on the tasks you are trying to do.  If you
are running linux as a desktop and just want to get stuff done, you
could very easily avoid the command line.  I personally don't
recommend that, but it's possible.  In your case though, running
apache and serving files, Michael is right, it's the only way to go.
