Cisco's VPN client for linux is marginal at best and sucks at worst.
You basically have to reinstall it every time you upgrade the kernel.
Plus it hooks into the network at a very low level, hiding all the
routes from you. But it is probably your best bet, especially because
OIT just gives you a cisco profile.

I use an open source Cisco client called vpnc [1]. It uses the standard
tun/tap interface, so it doesn't require any special kernel support
(unless you run gentoo :) and lets you set up the routes normally with
the route command. Of course you do have to know all the routes and the
gateway address to get this to work. I'll have to try setting it up for
BYU and see if I can get it to work. Actually looking at the web page,
it appears that vpnc can actually learn the routes from the server and
set it all up for you. So who knows. It may just work.
