Ubuntu Dapper has gnome-screensaver instead of xscreensaver. It is
annoying because it seems to be much slower to recognize that you are
typing in your password to unlock the screen than xscreensaver was.
With xscreensaver I could sit down and type, type in my password, hit
enter, and the screen would unlock before the ugly dialog would even
get a chance to appear. With gnome-screensaver I sit down, start to
type my password, and about 5 minutes later the new nice-looking
dialog appears, with only three little circles representing the last
three characters of my password. Then it's backspace three times and
start over. So obnoxious.
So I decided I must need to switch back to xscreensaver. But then I
thought, the only reason I use the password lock at home is to keep
the two-year-old from wandering by, pulling up a terminal and typing
'rm -rf /' while happily shouting, "I typing my name, Dad!" And the
only reason the screensaver lock is really annoying me is because I
have to use my ultra-hard-to-type secure user password every time I
want to glance at the latest weather report or stock prices.
Does anyone know how to use an alternate password for the screensaver
lock? Something hard enough for a two-year old not to guess, but easy
to type when in a hurry to check the latest stock prices?
Thanks,
Bryan
