I also agree that Kerberos would be the best solution.  Any time I hear
single sign-on, Kerberos immediately pops in my head.

Doesn't Firefox support GSSAPI?  If so, then it also supports Kerberos,
as long as the Kerberos server (KDC) supports GSSAPI (which I think most
implementations do).
