> I want something that will be able to handle dd-wrt or another os if > something else is better than dd-wrt I've always liked Tomato more than dd-wrt. I don't know if things got better, but when I tried dd-wrt it felt bloated to me.
> So, any suggestions on what to get? How much were you planning on spending? If you have an old PC, you could set it up with a 2nd NIC and set up something like m0n0wall, pfSense, Smoothwall, or something like those (if you go to wikipedia they have a list of free, open-source Linux or BSD-based router software that will run on nearly any PC). If you wanted to spend some money, you could do as David suggested and go to DD-WRT's supported platforms page, I would check forums for reviews and what-not. Netgear also has an open-source router they sell, and support a community for. Check out www.myopenrouter.com. If you wanted to go a bit more pricey, at one point I spent $200 for a PCEngines Alix2d3. It's a small device, practically a PC, that's roughly the same size as a 4-port switch. It's way more powerful than I need for my home router, but was a lot of fun setting up. It's also a lot less power-consuming than a PC as I first suggested as the free option, and smaller so it's easier to place wherever you want. It should be able to run any of the OSes I mentioned in that same paragraph (m0n0wall, etc). I don't mean to advertise, but if you want this option email me off the list and we can discuss the possibility of me letting mine go. Hope this helps, Eric
