Hey vbox-users,
This is my first time mailing this list. Just some quick context so you
know where I'm coming from: I'm a novice VirtualBox user. Most of my
experience has been using prebuilt images (e.g. virtualboxes.org), and I
haven't really used the VirtualBox GUI; most of the VMs I've used have been
hosted remotely, and I've been interacting with them via SSH and the
vboxmanage command-line utility. For various reasons the only networking
configuration I've used in practice has been NAT with port-forwarding.
I want to learn how to use the packer <https://packer.io/> virtual machine
creation utility. I followed the virtualbox-iso example
<https://www.packer.io/docs/builders/virtualbox-iso.html>; the virtual
machine seems to build without issue. Packer produces two files:
packer-virtualbox-iso-1428331343-disk1.vmdk
packer-virtualbox-iso-1428331343.ovf
I import the virtual machine with the following command:
vboxmanage import --vsys 0 --vmname ubuntu
packer-virtualbox-iso-1428331343.ovf
So far so good; I'm having the following problem(s) when running the vm:
1. While booting, the vm spends a long time trying to configure the
network (when the messages "Waiting for network configuration..."
and "Waiting
up to 60 more seconds for network configuration..." appear on the
console).
2. After logging in on the guest, I am unable to access the internet.
There's no DNS service (the /etc/resolv.conf file is effectively empty),
and when I try to ping a public IP address I get an error message (connect:
Network is unreachable).
