Thanks for the info. The problem with my Win2KPro guest is that, while
it does recognize the Intel Nic devices when enabled, it can't find a
driver for them. And, because there is no internet connection the driver
can't be downloaded.

Of course enabling the PCnet-FAST III in addition to the Intel nic will
enable me to get to the internet via the PCnet-FAST III to download the
driver, but it's a bit of a kludge to have to do it that way.

I started with the PCnet-FAST III interface and I could do a lot. But later, under certain circumstances, I had the problem that the whole VM did freeze. Using the virtual Intel NIC solved that problem. The server is running stable whatever it does.

This has nothing to do with the physical interface. The problem was there on three different systems with three different NIC's, but with the same VM.

Note that in the upcoming 2.2.2 there are several fixes for network card related hangs, for both amd and intel families actually. The circumstances in which those triggered are pretty difficult to describe, it depends on many factors including the precise timing of host and guest activity. As the virtual network cards have different timing properties the hangs could just show up with one of them...
