Hello Jim, Your best bet to locate hooks would be to visit the fly fishing shop in your town.
Off the Hook Fly Shop 1353 Broadway Placerville, CA 95667-5901 (530) 626-5041 They would be able to get you the proper hooks for the types of flies you are interested in tying. As far as backing for homemade flyboxes... 1. the rubbery nubby material used in RVs to keep items from sliding around in shelves 2. high density polyester batting sold in rolls at fabric shops -- can be purchased in 1/2" thicknesses. 3. various types of foam similar to that used in exercise mats Sure other VFB members can suggest additional fly box backing materials for homemade boxes.
