Jim,
1. There was just a hook-swap that you could have joined and gotten a
long-term supply of your fav. hooks very cheap.
2. Depending on whether you are just storing flies or want to use the fly box
for fishing, there are lots of choices. For boxes that I just store flies in,
I use thin foam on one side and a flat magnet sheet on the other. When you
visit Sportsman's warehouse, pick up a bunch of their business cards- thy are
printed on this magent sheet material, and in a clear box, they advertise for
them. They don't have a ton of stick, but then you are just sorting and
storing flies.
For fishing boxes that I am repeatedly removing and replacing flies in, I like
the stick-on ripple-foam pads. I can cut to fit, make strips, do just a
portion coupled with stronger magnet sheets than can be gotten in craft stores.
For most use, tho, I like the small Cliff-boxes- 'Day-trippers' I think
they're called. They hold a variety of flies on foam strips and also have the
magnet for midges. They also open one-handed, a nice touch.
Who knows when they first came out with the aluminum fly boxes that had the
fine springs covered by a metal plate for inserting hooks?

Again for "storing" do you mean storing the hooks prior to use for
tying or storage for displaying flies??
