Preston,
  I tie a lot of mono eyes and it usually takes quite a few wraps and
pulling very tight on the thread. I haven't found another way to do it
either, but I've never had a problem with doing it this way since the wraps
get covered by other material and this section (between the eyes) doesn't
have to be quite as small.
