I was taught to really secure dumbell eyes (which we really need to do in saltwater flies)Yes...everyone has offered great suggestions. I can add one extra step. Here's how I do it...
is to make about 4 wraps going in one direction before you switch or cross over. ie
don't make full figure 8's right away only a few half 8's.... then the other half ....then full eights.
Then go underneath like others have stated.
And yes, Zap a gap (super glue gel)is a good finisher.
On a thread base...4-5 wraps across one direction...4-5 wraps across the opposite direction...this makes your criss-cross. Then 4-5 wraps behind the dumbell with tension towards the eye of the hook...and another 4-5 wraps in front of the dumbell with tension rearward. Then another 2-3 cross wraps in each direction and a final few wraps under the dumbell but above the shank. Add a drop of super glue and it shouldn't move! At least not until you've already landed a few fish...;^)
