Ed, I like to keep it as simple as possible too. But I agree with teaching the Bic pen (minus cartridge) technique. My skin is so dry that my fingers crack badly in the Winter (and always have). Any beginners with a similar problem (and with a group that big, there are bound to be one or two) will have terrific problems making a half hitch using their finger, because the thread will catch in the cracks in the skin.
