Allan

I find that as more years pass, I have more problems with dry hands.

My solution is a "folk solution". It is Bag Balm. Bag Balm is sold at all of your better feed and livestock supply stores. It has also made it to some of the trendy outdoor outfitters. Bag balm says right on it "for veterinary use only". It is a product to keep the udders of cows from chapping. I've known some people to use it as a cure for diaper rash on babies also. It is greasy but it has worked well for me for 15+ years. It has a much longer effect than any hand lotion I have tried and seems to aid in repairing split fingers and such.

Ed, I like to keep it as simple as possible too. But I agree with teaching
the Bic pen (minus cartridge) technique. My skin is so dry that my fingers
crack badly in the Winter (and always have).

Any beginners with a similar problem (and with a group that big, there are
bound to be one or two) will have terrific problems making a half hitch
using their finger, because the thread will catch in the cracks in the skin.

I prefer doing a whip finish 'by hand', but have to use a Matarelli
whip-finish tool in the Winter.
